The Spaces Between the Noise

There’s a rhythm that runs through this place.

Mornings begin softly. Maggies calling from the paddocks, fairy wrens flitting through the garden, kookaburras laughing in the bush across the road. Busy ducks chatter on the creek while water tumbles steadily over the weir, its song as constant as breath.

Sometimes the horse next door joins in with a noisy whinny, answered by the distant bark of a farm dog. From the gums up the hill in the evening, the unmistakable grunts of koalas in love. Then the roll of a sheep truck through town, the burble of weekend motorbikes riding into the village, the easy “How ya goin’?” called from a passing ute as I water the front garden.

This is the sound of my village, a gentle, familiar chorus to accompany work, play and thought. It changes with the seasons, but always settles the spirit. It’s the kind of music you only hear when you slow down enough to listen.

In a world that feels increasingly loud, I’m learning to tune in to the softer things – to birdsong over background noise, to the hum of bees in the garden instead of the endless online buzz. This time of year, the noise grows sharper – sales, countdowns, the clatter of more, more, more. But here, the soundscape reminds me what truly matters.

At Southern Wild Co, we choose not to join the Black Friday din. We’d rather celebrate stillness – the hush before summer, the rustle of wrapping paper, the soft flicker of a candle on the table. The season ahead is for gathering, for beauty, for generosity of spirit – not rush or noise.

Last week, we released our new Bendigo Pottery x Southern Wild Co Magic Pudding candle – a collaboration that brings together two timeless makers. Handcrafted in Australia’s oldest pottery and filled with our signature Magic Pudding scent, it’s a small act of slow beauty, designed to be kept, refilled, and treasured long after Christmas has passed.

And when the day’s sounds fade and the Atelier grows quiet, I’ve been reading A Visual Feast by Jono Fleming – a book that celebrates interiors filled with story, soul and texture. It’s a reminder that our surroundings, like our soundscapes, shape how we feel – and that beauty often comes from tuning in rather than turning up.

To close the week, we were delighted to find Southern Wild Co featured in Country Style’s Christmas special issue, Flicker Fest – a lovely nod to adding the final flourish to your festive decorating with a candle. A quiet, glowing moment amidst the noise.

So here’s to the sounds that ground us – the birds, the breeze, the murmur of country life. The small, ordinary notes that make up the song of home.
