Quiet Local
There’s a gentle shift settling over the village as autumn bows out gracefully, leaving us with just one more week of coppery leaves and fog-softened mornings. Wandering through Rockley, there’s a quiet beauty in the last leaves drifting down, turning the village pathways into carpets of gold and rust.

A recent drive through the Abercrombie National Park, on winding roads cloaked in morning mist and the comforting scent of wet eucalyptus felt like moving through an impressionist painting, each bend offering notes on colour and marks for future paintings. Emerging at the top, above a sea of clouds, the landscape felt quietly extraordinary. The stillness and quiet of the countryside reminded me how deeply peaceful this region truly is.
When I left the isolation of our farm, I wondered how I'd adapt to village life, in particular worrying about nights filled with noise (oh the things I worried about!). But here, evenings are serenely peaceful. The gentle rush of the creek across the road, punctuated only occasionally by a distant bark or crow from the neighbour’s slightly confused rooster.
As I settle into a new way of life without my love, this big old house is slowly wrapping its arms around me, gaining my trust and winning my heart. The quiet company of the village has become a source of strength. There's reassurance in the quiet presence of neighbours and the feeling of belonging woven into our community. There’s solace in feeling connected to the history and people who've called this house home for more than a century.
This week’s Sketches is a heartfelt nod to the loveliness happening right on our doorstep – events that celebrate the creativity, warmth and spirit of local life. From artisanal markets under towering elms to culinary gatherings in converted woolsheds, each moment offers the perfect excuse for a quick escape, a refreshing breath of country air and a peaceful night under cosy layers.
Here’s what's inspiring and delighting us this week. Mark your calendars and come join us!
