Here are 8 tips on how to create the calm work space of your dreams.
Scientific studies indicate that our brains are agitated by mess and busyness, while order and symmetry help it to relax. Removing clutter from your desk improves productivity and gives a sense of satisfaction, which becomes a powerful antidote to anxiety.
TIP Papers strewn about your desk can make you look not only disorganised, but also anxious and perhaps even overwhelmed. Sort and organise them into trays within easy reach of your desk or somewhere else hidden from view. The only papers on your desk should be those directly related to your current task. If you do nothing else, do this. Many people notice a dramatic improvement in their productivity once the clutter is gone.
It’s very easy to feel overwhelmed when there is much to do and sitting at your desk without a plan of attack will prevent even the best of people from getting the job done. So, be organised and plan your next working day before you go home.
TIP Take 15 minutes before you head home to list the five most important tasks for you to do the next day. Then you can knock them out of the way before you respond to any non-urgent requests.
We love indoor plants, foliage and flowers and bringing them into our workspace helps us connect with the natural world. Besides being aesthetically pleasing, the residual effects of indoor plants and floral displays overflow into a calm and centred feeling of wellbeing, the perfect environment for generating creativity and productivity.
TIP At Southern Wild Co, we always have large bunches of eucalypt or beautiful natives on display for a pop of colour. Science shows that not only do flowers make us happier, they have strong positive effects on our emotional wellbeing. We’re big fans of indoor plants too. Large or small, not only is it exciting to watch them grow, they help clean the air by generating oxygen and filtering toxins.
It has been scientifically proven that natural light has an enormous impact on both our physical and emotional wellbeing. Having access to natural light and fresh air will keep you feeling refreshed and grounded during the day.
TIP If possible, situate your work space near a window to make the most of natural light and fresh air.
An experiment carried out by researchers at the University of Exeter found that office workers were up to 32 per cent more productive when given control of how to arrange and decorate their work space.
TIP At Southern Wild Co, adding inspiring images and quirky personal mementos to our work spaces makes us genuinely happy and is conducive to being creative.
Always stay hydrated. It’s recommended that we drink at least eight cups of water per day and staying hydrated will increase our productivity, help keep energy levels up and fine tune our focus. Regular movement and deep breathing is such a simple tip to reduce stress, encourage calmness at work and keep your body healthy.
TIP Buy yourself a lovely water jug and glass, keep it on your desk and fill it every morning before you start work, with the aim of finishing it by the end of the day. And don’t forget to move! We’re not designed to sit for eight hours-a-day behind a desk, so every hour, stop, stretch and breathe.
Depending on where you work, if it’s possible to have a little music playing in the background, we highly recommend it. For us, music can be relaxing, stimulating or reviving.
TIP Play around with difference types of music, especially when you have multiple tasks to complete. We often have classical music playing softly in the background when focusing on a creative task, or for that mindless paperwork, you can’t go wrong with your old favourites.
Candles are the perfect way to set a mood, add a touch of calm and an aromatic quality to your work space. Scent has the power to shape and change your mood and, depending on whether you need a fresh little lift in the afternoon or a comforting scent all day long, burning a candle gives you the option to mix it up to suit your mood.
TIP Lighting a candle adds a little bit luxury to our workspace and gives us a sense of wellbeing. A flickering flame is also a nice distraction for your eyes from the computer screen and a great way to stop for a minute and recalibrate. We’ll be honest, some of our best ideas have emerged whilst staring into the warm glow of a scented candle!
